The Story behind United for a Smile or Unidos por un Sonrisa!

With the purpose of making a difference in the lives of the impoverished children and elderly. My family and I distribute toys to children and boxes of food to the elderly in Ecuador during the Christmas season. As far as I can remember, my family and I would visit Ecuador yearly, contributing to less fortunate families as much as we could. We would dedicate a few days to distribute a variety of necessities and gifts, including gently used clothes and toys.

We hand delivered them because we wanted to make sure that the items successfully reached the intended parties. In 2017, we started to include our family and friends to help with donations. We had fun organizing fundraisers such as bingos and volleyball tournaments. As we had more volunteers and contributors, we were able to expand and send more toys/candy/food packages to impoverished areas. Purchasing the toys and candy wholesale for the children was a great way to ensure there was enough for everyone based on the amount of donations.

This would not be possible without the help of our friends and family. Even though we reached a small amount of schools and communities, seeing the smiles, humbleness and genuine gratitude for such โ€œsmallโ€ items was priceless. For me this experience was very eye opening, I learned to appreciate the things we have in life and not take things for granted. Regardless of the situation with COVID-19, we are still attempting to organize events and fundraisers for United for smiles. The need to help is greater especially because of the losses these children have faced. A wise woman saidโ€œ Don't tire of doing little things for others, because sometimes those little things occupy the biggest part of their heart. In life we cannot always do great things, but we can always do small things with great loveโ€. Please click on the link below to see the 2018 video of the toy distribution.
